I’ve been putting together lectures on remote sensing for the fourth Coursera GIS course this week, and apparently it means this newsletter is a little focused on remote sensing and satellite imagery. Did you know that the European Space Agency can detect millimeters of subsidence in land, from space, using radar? That’s pretty amazing to think about, not just from an accuracy standpoint, but the idea of space-based radar, which isn’t new, is super interesting. Still, we have a few other things this week, so hopefully you won’t be bored. If you’re in the United States, have a great holiday weekend and be safe! See you next week.

Mapping that sinking feeling / Sentinel-1 / Copernicus / Observing the Earth / Our Activities / ESA
For a low-lying, densely populated country like the Netherlands, monitoring subsidence is critical. Until recently, tiny displacements in the ground beneath our feet couldn’t be mapped nationally but, thanks to the Sentinel-1 mission, this is now possible.
