Hi there, welcome to the official start of fall (or spring for those of you on the other half of the planet). I have a short reader for you today, on account of focusing on some other work over the past month, but still a few items of interest! I personally enjoyed the first item, from the Center for Investigative Reporting’s “Reveal” on how they found people who were ignoring drought regulations in California and using too much water. Last thing: I should be back to a more normal once a week or every other week schedule now - see you next time!

Now this is a story all about how we found the Wet Princes of Bel Air | Reveal
An excellent example of using remotely sensed imagery to monitor compliance with local environmental regulations. In this case, they looked for large homes using too much water on lawns in Southern California. A good story that’s worth a read and explains some concepts to new remote sensing users.

Global Content Challenge
Esri has a competition for students to create Esri story maps on a wide range of topics - it’s open until November 11th, and includes prizes up to $10,000.

Becoming a Pilot
Since the last time I sent this newsletter, the United States Federal Aviation Administration finalized its new rules (referred to as Part 107) for commercial flying of nmanned aerial systems (commonly called UAVs, UAS, or “drones”). This page helps you get started with what you need to know in order to get licensed to fly commercially.
|
Activities and Courses - FAASafety.gov
If you *are* interested in becoming a pilot for commercial drones, this site has a course you can take that’s an introduction to the material on the test. For reference, a now-licensed coworker of mine said the test was substantial, but that 15-20 hours of studying should be fine for someone who has flown drones casually and has some introduction to the concepts already.

A VerySpatial Podcast!
One of the only spatial/GIS podcasts out there, and a good one. Entertaining and interesting, it’s worth a listen if you like spatial technology and podcasts.

SSP Innovations - YouTube
GIS is important in the utility sector, but I’m often not able to speak to its uses much, since I haven’t worked in the field. This video series from SSP, a consulting firm, covers some GIS topics of interest for the utility sector.
